Rules: When Marrying An Older Richer Person

So, he popped the question and you are overjoyed!!! Why wouldn't you be? He is filthy rich and powerful after all...and he wants to spend the rest of his life with you!  Wonderful!

Then, reality sets in:

  1. Drama from your side of the family.
  2. Envious friends whisper and/or drop out of your life.
  3. Distant relatives and old childhood friends show up to lend "support".
  4. Old co-workers and bosses begin sending friend requests and posting old pics of you and them together while trying to sell "personal" stories about you to which ever media outlet is willing to pay a fee for the "information".
  5. Drama from his side of the family.
  6. You just want his money.
  7. You are scum of the earth, especially if he has an ex-wife and/or children.
  8. His friends will smile in your face but they are watching you...
When all of these "realities" begin to surface, what do you do?  How do you handle this? Oh, and did I mention all the creditors, debt collectors and identity theft hounds who will try their little tricks? Oh yeah, phone calls and letters multiply ten fold overnight...

How to cover yourself and still enjoy being in love:

1. Keep everything you always had.
2. Open your own business, if you don't have one already.
3. Sign a pre-nuptial stating you don't want any part of the estate in the event of divorce.
4. Stand with your beloved yet keep your nose out of their money situations.
5. Identify who you can truly trust within your own circle and make sure to nurture those relationships.
6. Be polite and cordial with your beloved's friends and family but no opinions - just smile and listen.
7. Shop, enjoy trips but store everything at your separate residence that you had prior to the marriage.
8. I also recommend a separate, secure storage facility for high dollar items and heavily insure these items.

When the end comes, whether death or divorce having followed these basic steps, you can walk away with confidence and dignity -  no hard feelings.
